Cinematography: Lighting
In lighting a film there is always 2 choices:
1. Natural Light
2. Studio Light
However even outdoor shoots usually have a battery of lights to supplement the so called natural lighting.
Bright lighting is called High Key Lighting and is normally used for romantic comedies.
Dark or dim lighting is called Low Key Lighting is normally found in horror films or dark thrillers.
There are always exceptions to these roles!!

Light Positioning
Lights can be placed almost anywhere to create an effect. This example is of John Wayne playing Ethan Edwards in the Searchers (1956). Side lighting or fill lighting may be used light half the characters face, again creating a sinister or mysterious look.
This is the Mandarin, the supposed main villain from Iron Man 3 (2013). The shadows leave us in no doubt that he is a bad guy. However in this film it is just a rouse. Film makers can break with convention to try and keep the audience on their toes. |
Lighting directly behind a character will create a silhouette which hides all of the characters features.
